This is a button I just
found, only partially cleaned. It appears that approximately 95% of the
gilt is still in tack as is the back of the button. This button is
listed in Albert's uniforms and historical buttons as #152B page 429. It
is listed as a button of the Van Buren and Harrison Campaign which
occurred in 1840. What amazes me most about this button is that it is
not only 161 years old, but could have been possibly been in the ground
that long, but also I know for a fact that the ground it was found in
has been under water since the 1940's, and the button is still in great
condition with the gold present.
